🎥 Ke Huy Quan was speaking at Cal State Fullerton and the whole campus was buzzing with excitement. One of the coolest things about going to CSUF is its Beyond the Conversation talk series. Every semester, ASI and Student Affairs invites one or two celebrities to come speak on campus about diversity and inclusion. Last year, we had Hunter Schafer, David Hogg, Nikole Hannah Jones, and Danny Trejo. I got to see Hunter Schafer and it was one of the coolest events that I went to last year. There is one big problem with that event though.
Cal State Fullerton is the biggest CSU in the system with over 40,000 students. Everyone wants to go to these type of events because it is a chance to see a celebrity on campus. The events are also free so they sell out super fast in terms of submitting your RSVP for it. With Hunter Schafer and Ke Huy Quan, I couldn't get on the list fast enough because I was in class when it was announced. I was on the waitlist initally both times. I was also notified an hour before each event that I got off the waitlist and just had enough time to haul it over to the Titan Student Union.
It is an hour long talk and they are always interesting to listen to because of the celebrity's unique perspective on issues. In my opinion, I thought the Hunter Schafer event was more interesting because the interviewee had better questions for her. ASI makes up the questions to ask them and they really struggled to come up with questions for Ke Huy Quan. A lot of them were redundant in the answers they were looking for on his perspective on diversity. The questions were mostly about how to make it as an actor and how to avoid being typecast. I wish I could have asked a question because as a journalism senior, I have learned how to ask unique and open-ended questions to not hear the same answer from the celebrity each time. Overall, it was a great event though and it was such a memorable experience for me as a transfer student.✨
If you are considering CSUF to transfer to or are an incoming student: try to attend at least one of these events before you graduate! They are so cool to be at! 🎤
